Helena Whyte heard about Let’s Read Math at a “Taste of Success” presentation at the 2007 AAUW National Convention in Phoenix. Unbeknownst to AAUW folks back east, Los Alamos proceeded to organize and implement an impressive list of Let’s Read Math activities:
- First, they presented three programs for teachers in the Los Alamos Public Schools. Teachers were awarded certification points for attending Let’s Read Math presentations about five different books. The elementary teachers especially liked the book Measuring Penny, because on state tests Los Alamos students had scored lowest in the area of measurement.
- In summer 2008, the branch presented The Greedy Triangle as a Family Night at the public library. The program was voted the most popular family night program at the library, and the branch was invited back to do another family night in July 2009.
- In February 2009, the branch did Picture Pie activities with students attending the Los Alamos “Discover E” night, sponsored for K-12 students by Engineering Societies. Students made pictures out of fraction circles.
