On January 29, 2009, branch representative Laura LeBlanc contacted us to ask about funding to start doing Let’s Read Math program activities in her part of Maryland, “We missed the deadline to apply for the Community Action Grant, and would like to know when the grant is offered next? “ Laura planned to do a presentation about Let’s Read Math at the AAUW-MD spring convention in Easton on April 18, 2009, but her new baby had a different idea when he decided to arrive a month early! She says her branch is interested in doing Let’s Read Math and they have contacted both the Talbot County Public Schools and the Dorchester County Public Schools to investigate ways to work together during 2009-2010.

Members from the Garrett branch of AAUW are associated with Garrett College. They asked if they could use the available LRM funds to support a 5th grade “College’n’Me” program that they run at the college. The program involves working with every 5th grade student in Garrett County, approximately 325 students over the course of each school year. We offered advice about which books to use and sent sample materials as part of the Community Action Grant from the AAUW Educational Foundation. They supplemented with funds from their College’n’Me grant and did geometry activities with their fifth graders over the course of the 2007-08 school year. In August 2008 they notified us that they would be repeating the program again during the 2008-09 school year, for another 325 fifth graders.
