Highlights of 2007: General
Progress of the Let’s Read Math Project: This was an exciting year for Let’s Read Math. Not only is the program expanding within AAUW, it is growing rapidly on its own. Since the first little workshop in October 2004, we conservatively estimate that in just three years the program has reached over 3000 adults and 12,000 children, from at least 10 different states. In 2007 we did professional development in schools, districts, colleges, regional education centers, for after school centers and day camp counselors, and at professional conferences.
Highlights of 2007 included presentations at the conferences of the Mercer County Education Association (in NJ), the Delaware County Early Childhood Educators Association (in PA), the National Center for Family Literacy (in Orlando FL), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (in Atlanta GA), and the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (in San Antonio, TX). The Bucks County YWCA (in PA) used Let’s Read Math with approximately 350 children in their 8 day camps, and Garrett College (in Maryland) did Let’s Read Math with 350 fifth graders in their region. We are also particularly proud of our training of 160 math and literacy coaches in El Paso TX. They are now running family nights in 55 elementary schools.
Let’s Read Math Funbooks and Teacher Guides: In March 2007, Teacher Guides were introduced for Funbooks 1 and 2. A primary grades Funbook (for grades K-2) and an upper grades Funbook (for grades 4-6+) were completed in December 2007, and will be available for purchase in February 2008.
Let’s Read Math Workshop Manuals: In summer 2007, we assembled a binder of 7 workshop manuals related to books in Funbook 1, and in February 2008 another binder of 8 workshop manuals was introduced for Funbook 2. Related professional development is available.
