Highlights of 2007: AAUW

Makefield AAUW
During 2007, the Makefield Area Branch of AAUW (www.aauwmakefield.org) continued its outreach at the Yardley-Makefield Branch of the Bucks County Free Library, with a series of 8 winter workshops. This was  followed by a month-long period of independent reading, and a celebration for children who completed their reading benchmarks. In June 2007, project director Claire Passantino organized a “Taste of Success” exhibit for AAUW’s national convention in Phoenix. In fall, the branch sponsored a children’s table at Lower Makefield’s Community Pride Day and two more parent-child workshops at the library.

West Chester AAUW
The West Chester-Chester County Branch of AAUW (www.aauwchestercountypa.org) continued its work with approximately 40 children attending summer day camp at the West Chester YWCA. The branch took the lead in writing a grant to continue Let’s Read Math and spread the program to other AAUW Branches in the Mid-Atlantic Region.  In July 2007 the branch succeeded in obtaining a 2-year community action grant from the AAUW (National) Education Foundation.  Shortly thereafter, branches who expressed an interest in the project received an introductory packet of Let’s Read Math materials.

Progress of LRM in AAUW
The Eastern Delaware County Branch worked with children in classrooms.  A branch on Long Island held its first Let’s Read Math workshop.  Garrett County AAUW in Maryland passed information about Let’s Read Math to Garrett College staff, who proceeded to run programs for 350 fifth graders in the region.  Let’s Read Math training sessions have been held on Long Island (for 3 branches), in Reading (for 2 branches) and in Philadelphia.  Several of these branches are about to start their own Let’s Read Math outreach.  Other presentations and training sessions are scheduled for 2008 (see calendar).
