Let’s Read Math: An Introduction for Educators, Grades K-4, at Montgomery IU
This training will take place at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, 1605 W. Main Street, Norristown, PA 19403. Participants will experience six different lessons for use in classrooms, or as family nights for parents and children together. Lessons are drawn from the Let’s Read Math Funbook 1, and participants will receive copies of the Funbook to take home. The Funbook has lesson ideas related to 16 children’s books, including the six that are featured in the workshop. Six Act 48 credits will be rewarded. This training will take place at The College of New Jersey. Participants will hear about the new Let’s Read Math Advanced Funbook 1, for Upper Grades. Lessons were developed for children in grades 4-6, but teachers told us these same lessons will work for middle grades. The Funbook has lessons related to 16 different children’s books. Included in the Funbook is a detachable list of websites related to the math lessons. These weblinks are also accessible on the Let’s Read Math website, www.letsreadmath.com. Participants will hear about how to use children’s books to launch fun math activities related to topics covered in state and national standards for teaching mathematics. This is all about the integration of math, language arts and other subject areas. Tech Savvy is a STEM project to promote Science-Technology-Engineering and Math for girls in grades 6 to 8. Leaders who work with the girls will attend two workshops: (1) about the Advanced Funbook lessons that have been created for use in upper grades, and (2) about having older girls mentor younger girls using Let’s Read Math lesson materials developed for younger grades. Let’s Read Math: Approaches for Family Literacy and English Language Learners
This is the annual conference of the National Center for Family Literacy. Participants at Let’s Read Math sessions will hear about how Let’s Read Math is being used at family nights for parents and children together, and about efforts to include English Language Learners. There will be a Let’s Read Math vendor’s table in the exhibit area. For more information about the NCFL conference, go to www.famlit.org. Let’s Read Math Summer Institute I at The College of New Jersey
Each day will focus on a different grade level. Math coaches and supervisors will want to attend for all three days, to experience activities across the grades. Teachers may want to attend just one or two days. The Summer Institute will be repeated August 19 - 20 - 21, but the content will be different in August because we will feature different children’s books at each session.
Tuesday:
Books and activities from the new Let’s Read Math Funbook A for primary grades. Each participant will receive a copy of Funbook A. This workshop will feature a strong “make-it and take-it” component.
Wednesday:
Books, lessons and family night ideas for books from Funbooks 1 and 2. The lessons work well at family workshops for parents and children in grades K-4, but are instructionally best for students in grades 2-3. Participants will get a copy of Funbook 1 (red) or Funbook 2 (blue). (Participant’s choice.)
Thursday:
Books and activities from the new Advanced Funbook 1 for upper grades. Lessons were developed using 5th grade standards. Teachers in grades 4-8 have all told us they can use lessons from this Funbook. Come see for yourself. We will also look at weblinks related to the lessons. Each participant will receive a copy of the Funbook.
